Originally shot on the typical medium earlier, now includes both digital and video productions which can either be direct to video, completed into a TV show or released in cinemas. It is labeled as filmmaking practice, a cinematic custom, and manner of audience response. It is evolving continuously and is without defined boundaries.Strictly speaking documentary films are non-fictional “portion of life” true life works of art- and occasionally know a cinema vérité. From their early beginning documentaries have diverged and taken varied forms.

There are six modes of Documentary Cinematography

Expository mode: this mode is used to make an argument. In general this is the model that is mostly associated with documentaries. The structure is dealt with a series of declaration supported by evidence. The declaration is obtained by verbal annotation from an unseen voice-over speaker, whereas the images deliver the evidence.

Observational mode: in this mode subject of everyday life is made to agree directly with the observation portrayed by a discreet camera. It is also recognized as the window of the world. Usually have no intertitles, no supplementary sounds or music, no voice-over. Social actors perform as if no film makers were present

Participatory mode: this mode highlights the communication between the director and subject maker. It permits the filmmaker to directly address the people in the appearing in the film. Historical issued are examined by using archival footage.

Poetic mode: this takes a nonfigurative approach to filmmaking; this mode is idiosyncratic, creative, Countenance. These films often stand similar to avant-garde or experimental films.

Reflexive mode: calls consideration to the expectations and agreements that administer documentary filmmaking to intensify our cognizance of how films make exemplifications of reality. This mode comprises of the mockumentary format. The focus of attention is the spectator. It is also involves the voice of God narration, images which is seen the Expository modes.

Performative mode: in this mode the individual or sensitive aspect of the filmmakers own participation with the subject to amplify the viewer’s response to the subject and to this participation. These films favor emotion and cull objectivity
